Six Months Later...

I'm still alive, surprisingly.
I've been through a move to a new city and my first semester of university. Crazy stuff. I guess I'm back for now.
Anyway, I'd really like to try and review some music I've been listening to lately. It seems like I've been listening to a very eclectic mix of bands I liked years ago and sort of forgot about. (Switchfoot, Bon Jovi, and 30 Seconds to Mars. Very odd mix, I'm aware)
Firstly, Hello Hurricane by Switchfoot.
So I'd kind of given up on Switchfoot but I must say that I really think they've picked things up with this album. While there are some songs on it that are in keeping with their earlier stuff (Oh! Gravity, to be specific) a lot of Hello Hurricane is refreshingly original. The first song I heard from it was Your Love is a Song. This happened, oddly enough, while I was watching last week's episode of One Tree Hill (yes, I watch OTH. Don't hold it against me, it's a long-time habit I can't seem to break.) I thought to myself, "this sounds like Switchfoot..." And sure enough, it was and I haven't been able to stop listening to this song since then. I'm not completely sure what it is but I think it's the beat in the verses that I love so much.

(I really don't know why the song cuts out at the end, but whatever, you get the gist of it)

Mess of Me is also rather enjoyable and a bit heavier than their regular stuff. The title track, Hello Hurricane is a bit of a disappointment, mostly because it sounds like a lot of their other songs, but it's forgivable. Overall, I really enjoy this album and will continue to listen to it for a long time, I'm sure. (4/5)

Secondly, I'd like to address Bon Jovi's new album, The Circle.
I found it very similar to Lost Highway, which isn't really a bad thing because I really did enjoy their new country influenced direction in it. The Circle is essentially a continuation of that album. Though, to be fair, they seem to be going back to their rock roots somewhat with songs such as Work for the Working Man and Bullet.

It's interesting that they can try the whole country thing and still stay classic. I realize a lot of people don't particularly enjoy that new direction but I think it works fairly well for them. (3.5/5)

Okay, I was planning on saying something about the new 30 Seconds to Mars album but I haven't really listened to enough of it yet to give it much of a review. I will say, though, that when I heard the single - Kings and Queens - I actually groaned. Then I took it off my playlist because I couldn't listen to it again. It's essentially unoriginal fluff that any other band could have come up with in about five minutes. BUT, I've listened to the rest of the album here and there and haven't heard anything else like that, thankfully. I'm still optimistic, and maybe I might even come back and do a real review of it if I ever get around to it. :P

I've saved the best for last (an indie, indie pop, electropop, whatever you want to call it, album that I absolutely love): the self-titled debut album by the Swedish band Miike Snow. I'm rather embarrassed to say that the first song of theirs I heard was Animal when it was on Gossip Girl one week. I think it's an awesome album, not really along the lines of what I normally listen to. It's always good to find something new, especially when that something is as awesome as this album is. Each song is different and distinguishable from the others. Animal is probably my favourite but I really enjoy Black and Blue, Burial, and Silvia. I'll stop trying to describe it now and let you listen for yourself. (5/5)

(We seem to have a hermit DJ here...)

Before wrapping this extremely exciting random musical entry up, I'd just like to say that everyone should watch the British film The Boat That Rocked (or Pirate Radio, as it was released in North America). This is not a request, it's a demand. Seriously awesome movie if you're into radio pirates and rock & roll and the 60's. Yes. Watch it.

(This is the North American trailer because I found it better than the UK version, even if they did play up the American DJ bit)

KOL

So I've always known that the Kings of Leon are awesome, but only lately have I really begun to grasp their epic awesomeness. Not sure where this revelation came from but here it is. Their music really does amaze me over and over again. Not even just the popular songs, but absolutely all of them. I just recently started listening to their two earlier albums and while I don't like them as much as their newer two, they're still great. Anywho, enough talking, time for pictures and videos. :)

Back when they were into the Bee Gees...hot frigging stuff...
(Poor Matt-face is just a lil blur)

Even more Bee Gee...y. How unfortunate.

Much better :)

Here's where life kinda sucks... All the videos from their official youtube channel don't allow embedding...so we'll just have to see what I can find...

Greetings and Salutations, all my imaginary followers! Geez, I love you guys.
Anywhoo, got back from Freddy yesterday after seeing the place I'm going to be living in, visiting the school, and getting passport stuff done for my New York/Nashville trip. Overall, a very productive visit. :) I'm really looking forward to the fall (a little nervous too, though). It's going to be so different and exciting. It's like switching lives with someone, that's how different my life is going to be. Different city, house, friends, daily activities... and even more so since I've been doing the exact same thing for about...11 months.... Goodbye, you mindless, tedious, horrible hell of a job! And good riddance.
So all my shows are out for the summer and that's unfortunate. Guess I'll actually have to go outside now...how terrible... :P In all seriousness, I really want beach weather...like now. We're like right on the edge of it but not quite there.
This website is incredibly interesting. TED
I really should check it out more than I already do, I just keep forgetting. :P
Soo, Hugh Jackman + Rob Pattinson = THIS Scuse me while I smile for a very long time. Oh, just realized something, Hugh and Rachel Weisz have already done a movie together: The Fountain. That was an odd one... Couldn't decide what exactly I thought of it. There was an enjoyable Hugh scene in it, though. :) For your viewing pleasure:

04.26.09

It's been a while since I wrote anything but that's okay... no one cares. :P I had one heck of a long day yesterday what with running around all over the province and trying to make it back in time for the Joel Plaskett concert last night...eep. Super tired today. He was totally worth all the rushing back home, though, haha.
Anyway, he did this song during the encore:

Looove it. :)
Apparently CBC was recording the show and for his second encore song he unplugged his guitar, stepped away from the mic and just played and sang. We could hear him perfectly and it was epic. He was like: "So there, CBC! Try and record me now!" :D Sooo great.
So Prison Break is back, folks, and I can't help but be somewhat glad that this is the last season despite my love for it.
Went-face
(Hello, Went-face)
It's just become so tedious. I didn't even know what was going on when I watched the first episode after the frigging four month break. And that makes perfect sense seeing as it was...four months long. (Why...why...?) At aaany rate, I will miss Wentworth but I'm sure he'll reappear somewhere.
Ooomg, am I ever tired of this city. I can't wait to go to school in the fall, it's going to be so great to completely change my surroundings. Taking a year off school is good in that you can figure out what you really want to do and save money but bad in that it's so incredibly boring. Soo...soo...boring.
We had the most summery day today! Was it ever great. :) It probably got up to around 25 this afternoon. (77 for you Americans) Best day weather-wise so far. I tried to fly my kite but the wind was so frigging erratic. I got pretty frustrated. Oooh well. There will be plenty more nice, windy days. I can't waaait to go to the beach. :)

04.12.09

Hey everyone (and by everyone I mean my imaginary friends. :) )
I guess it's the 12th now seeing as it's 2 a.m. Obviously I don't have to get up tomorrow, getting kinda tired, though. Anywhoo, just discovered this fellow: http://www.tylershields.com/. His stuff is really neat and edgy. His video portraits seemed kinda odd to me at first but now I think they're really interesting.

ADORE Matt Dallas (ignoring the gay rumours :P Yes, RUMOURS!)
Bah, my photography seems so boring now.
Omg, we're getting a snowstorm here tonight...in the middle of April...how ridiculous is that. Is it really too much to ask for some nice weather for a few days? Really?
I ranted and raved about Gossip Girl today on Sidereel, I'm sure someone will hate me, heheh.
Bought the Sam Roberts album, Love at the End of the World, today...quite proud of myself. :)

I would like to know where I can get square prints. It's like no one will make them!

*drool*

So I'm going to see Joel Plaskett at the Capitol in a couple weeks so that should be good. :)

So I'm all caught up with Gossip Girl...which is kind of sad because now I have to wait for the episodes like everyone else... Oh well. It's worth it.

(Need I say more?)
*drools again*

I've got to get out and take more pictures soon. I've been such a slacker lately. It's just hard to do stuff after coming home every day from an incredibly tiring job I hate. I did go for a run today so that was good. :) ...but then I had some chocolate Easter bunny... Oh well, I was going to eat it anyway. It's not like I could just leave it sitting there. :P
Volunteering for the Frye Literary Festival starting next week. Now that will be exciting, getting out to do something different, being around writers! Ahh, I'm kinda noivous! I'll survive. I should really start writing more. I'M SO UNMOTIVATED! SOMEONE MOTIVATE ME!

04.08.09

Sooo I've just recently started watching Gossip Girl and am addicted to say the least. (pathetically mainstream of me, I know) I've made it to the 11th episode of the 2nd season and I can't help but notice how incredibly annoying Serena is. Her character makes absolutely not sense and I don't get her at all. I don't understand why the makers seem to think that they can make the viewers accept her unbelievable character traits. When she's nice, she's too nice and when she's not it feels like a half-hearted attempt at showing her 'other, wilder side'. I do really enjoy the show, though. Especially since the soundtrack to episode 11 was almost completely comprised of Kings of Leon songs. :D

Blah, ignore the video, just listen to the song. (All embed-ing of official music videos has been disabled...l.a.m.e.)

(Wanted to post Sex on Fire...best song ever)

Someday I'm going to see them in concert. Just not this month. :(
Someday I'm going to do a lot of things.
Honestly, Kings of Leon is probably my favourite band of all time next to The Beatles. They're quite simply amazing.
Speaking of The Beatles:

Watch this movie. BUT BEWARE: the girl is weird and you will not like her. (That might just be me, though, who knows.)

04.05.09

Hey folks,
I suppose I'll start by introducing myself. I'm an eighteen yr old Canadian photographer, writer, music lover, movie watcher, and facebook stalker...among many other things. (Obviously it's too late at night for me to think of anything else.) I would like to say that my blog is named after this great Jack Savoretti song. (The video is also great.)

I really love art and photography and you can find my deviantart account at http://spell-bound170.deviantart.com/ .

That's about all I have to say at this point. Hopefully my next post will fine me in a more chatty mood. :)
